STARTING AIR DISTRIBUTOR

Understanding the Main Engine Starting Air Distributor
-

The Main Engine Starting Air Distributor

The main engine starting air distributor plays a critical role in the operation of large marine diesel engines. Its primary function is to supply pilot air to each individual cylinder in the precise firing order required during engine startup. By doing so, it ensures that the main starting air valves of the cylinders open at the exact sequence and time necessary to initiate rotation.

Core Function: To regulate and sequence the admission of high-pressure starting air into the engine cylinders, converting pneumatic energy into mechanical rotation.

Mechanical Arrangement & Design

The architecture of the distributor is highly precise. Each cylinder features its own dedicated starting control valve. Components are arranged according to the following mechanical layout:

  • Radial Configuration: The starting control valves are arranged radially around a centralized starting air distributor cam.
  • Camshaft Drive: The central cam is mechanically driven from the engine's main camshaft via a dedicated vertical shaft.
  • Negative Cam Profile: A negative cam profile is situated at the end of the shaft. For reversible engines, two distinct cams are present—one configured for Ahead operation and one for Astern.

Step-by-Step Sequence of Operation

When an operator initiates the engine start sequence, a highly coordinated pneumatic process takes place within the distributor assembly:

  1. Activation: When the engine starting lever is operated, control air pressurized at approximately 7 bar enters the distributor housing.
  2. Cam Engagement: This incoming control air forces all individual control valves downward against their internal return springs, pushing them directly onto the cam surface.
  3. Pilot Air Delivery: If a specific cylinder happens to be in the correct position for starting, its respective control valve drops cleanly into the cam depression. This movement allows pilot air to pass cleanly through to the top of that cylinder's main starting air valve, forcing it open.
  4. Cylinder Ventilation & Rotation: Simultaneously, air resting on the lower side of the main starting air valve is vented directly to the atmosphere. Main starting air then rushes into the cylinder, forcing the piston down and turning the engine.

System Reset and Deactivation

Once the engine achieves its specified firing speed and the starting sequence is brought to a halt, the system cleanly resets itself:

Automatic Disengagement

When the starting air command is stopped, the control air supply (7 bar) is immediately cut off. Without air pressure holding them down, the internal springs instantly push the control valves away from the cam surface. This completely halts the pilot air supply, resetting the mechanism for the next start cycle.
