Q1. With regards to Minimum requirements for seafarers to work on a ship, as per (MLC) 2006, write a short note on the following:
(a) Minimum age to work on a ship;
(b) Medical certification for duties on board;
(c) Training and Qualification;
(d) Recruitment and Placement.
Q2. Classification societies are Recognized Institutions and play an important role implementation of national and international regulations. State the limitations of the highlighting them with reasons. List the statutory services undertaken by a classification on behalf of Administration.
Q4. On a ship, you are employed as Chief Engineer. The vessel has UMS system for controlling engine room and a central scanning and data logging system for monitoring. Explain the special attention you will pay to the specific data and formulate a chart for condition monitoring. Highlight the tools in computer application you will use for making graphical representation of the salient points, which will enable trend analysis.
Q9. During inspection of propeller in the dry dock, a surface crack has been noticed on one of the blades. State the steps taking by you as chief engineer for successful handling of the situation. Also, if some surface cracks are noticed on the keyway of a tail-end shaft, state the steps taken by you for tackling the problem. Explain the effects in case the cracks, as stated, are not dealt with at the proper time.
Q3. A. State the applicable regulation of SOLAS and MARPOL under which it is mandatory for a flag state to conduct an investigation into any casualty; B. Write briefly the salient points of casualty investigation code and the recommended practices for a safety investigation into a marine casualty or marine incident; C. What do you understand by the term “very serious marine casualty”?
Q3. A. Explain the following modern methods of turbo charging - i. Pulse converter system; ii. Sequential turbo charging; iii. 2 stage turbo charging; iv. Variable geometry turbo charger.
Q9. With respect to Exhaust Gas Boiler;
A. Describe the procedure to be adopted for inspection of a safety valve fitted to an exhaust gas fired auxiliary boiler stating, with reasons which parts should receive particularly close attention.
B. Describe the procedure for the setting valve of safety valves of exhaust gas operated auxiliary boilers
C. Explain the action a chief engineer should taken after setting of safety valves as in B.
Q5. Describe the methodology you will practice during taking over/ handing over of your vessel in a foreign port as a CE towards inventory management of LO/IFO onboard. In case of dispute arising thereof, describe how it can be solved? During the circumstances, how you would ascertain the amount of oil not fit for use?
Q2. A. With respect to refrigeration gases used on board vessels answer the following; B. Explain ozone depleting potential of conventional ref gases; C. Name alternative refrigeration gases available and being used on board; D. Explain the steps you will take to ensure that release of refrigeration gases from the plant is minimized during normal operation and during maintenance activities.
