After the overhaul of the pump , the setting is done as follows:
(1) Fuel cam setting with respect to piston travel circle.
(2) Beginning of injection.
(3) Termination of injection.
The beginning of injection is measured by measuring the axial position of pump plunger at its outer-most position with respect to the suction port. The position of pump body is adjustable by raising or lowering and thus altering the beginning of injection late or early. An easy method of adjustment provided by engine makers is the use of a setting gauge or mandrel , also called a “go” “no-go ”gauge., which is inserted through a side plug hole inside the pump chamber, when the plunger is at the base circle of the cam. The entry of the gauge would require raising or lowering of pump body accordingly. The clearance between pump body base and the support frame is then suitably nulled by fitting a liner or shim of appropriate thickness., before tightening the pump body on its base
The pump is overhauled whenever the plunger is worn out indicated by leakage of fuel oil from pump barrel and dripping into the crank case. It is also overhauled if the other components like spring , pushrod , and pinion are damaged by wear.
