Feed systems

( 1 Vote )
 Feed systems
The feed system completes the cycle between boiler and turbine toenable the exhausted steam to return to the boiler as feedwater. Thefeed system is made up of four basic items: the boiler, the turbine, thecondenser and the feed pump. The boiler produces steam which issupplied to the turbine and finally exhausted as low-energy steam to thecondenser. The condenser condenses the steam to water (condensate)which is then pumped into the boiler by the feed pump.

Boiler burners

Boiler burners

The main type of combustion process is called the suspended flame. The flame front remains in the same position relative to the burner and quarl. The fuel particles pass through the flame completing their combustion process and exiting at the same rate as the fuel entering.

Primary Flame

The primary flame is essential to good combustion.By design the primary flame exists where it receives maximum reflected heat from the shape of the quarl. The...

Boilers

General

A boiler in one form or another will be found on every type of ship.  Where the main machinery is steam powered, one or more large watertube  boilers will be fitted to produce steam at very high temperatures and pressures. On a diesel main machinery vessel, a smaller (usually firetube type) boiler will be fitted to provide steam for the various ship services. Even within the two basic design types, watertube and firetube, a variety of...

Steam turbines and gearing

Steam turbines and gearing

General

The steam turbine has until recently been the first choice for very large power main propulsion units. Its advantages of little or no vibration, low weight, minimal space requirements and low maintenance costs are considerable. Furthermore a turbine can be provided for any power rating likely to be required for marine propulsion. However, the higher specific fuel consumption when compared with a diesel engine offsets these advantages...

FLASH STEAM AND ENERGY LOSS

( 0 Votes )
Flash Steam and Energy Loss
When flash steam is generated and vented to the surroundings, a considerable amount of energy is lost
If the condensate receiver in a steam distribution system is vented to the surroundings, flash steam will generate and evacuate, and a considerable amount of energy will be lost.
The flash steam generated depends on the initial and final pressure before and after the condensate traps for the heat exchangers. In the example - calculating generated flash steam -...
