Gas turbines

( 0 Votes )
Gas turbinesGas turbines have dominated warship propulsion for many years but their potential remains to be fully realized in the commercial shipping sector. Breakthroughs in containerships, a small gas carrier and the Baltic ferry Finnjet during the 1970s promised a deeper penetration that was thwarted by the rise in bunker prices and the success of diesel engine designers in raising specific power outputs and enhancing heavy fuel burning capability. In recent years, however, gas...

Low speed four-stroke trunk piston engines
The marine diesel propulsion market is dominated by direct-coupled low speed two-stroke crosshead engines and geared high/medium speed four-stroke trunk piston engines but some Japanese and east Asian regional operators of coastal/shortsea, fishing and small oceangoing vessels appreciate the merits of a ‘hybrid’ alternative: the low speed four-stroke trunk piston engine.
Low speed four-stroke engine designs, a traditional Japanese...

Other medium speed engines
ABC
Two medium speed engine series are fielded by the Anglo Belgian Corporation (ABC) for propulsion and auxiliary power applications. The 242 mm bore/320 mm stroke DX type is produced in three, six and eight in-line cylinder versions to cover an output band up to 883 kW at 720 or 750 rev/min. DX models are naturally aspirated; DXS models are turbocharged; and DXC models are turbocharged and intercooled.
The DZ type is a 256 mm bore/310 mm stroke design offered...

Wärtsilä
The Wärtsilä Corporation grew from a modest Finnish base in the 1970s to become a world force in four-stroke engine design and production through the development of its own medium speed programme and international acquisitions. Enginebuilders absorbed into the group over the years include Nohab Polar of Sweden, Stork-Werkspoor Diesel of The Netherlands, Wichmann of Norway, the French companies Duvant-Crepelle and SACM, Echevarria of Spain, and GMT of Italy.
In 1997 Wärtsilä...

High speed engines

High speed four-stroke trunk piston engines are widely specified for propelling small, generally specialized, commercial vessels and as main and emergency genset drives on all types of tonnage. The crossover point between high and medium speed diesel designs is not sharply defined but for the purposes of this chapter engines running at 1000 rev/min and over are reviewed.
Marine high speed engines traditionally tended to fall into one of two design categories...

Sulzer (Wärtsilä)
A successful medium speed engine programme embracing the 200 mm bore S20, 400 mm bore ZA40S and 500 mm bore ZA50S designs was offered by New Sulzer Diesel before becoming part of the Wärtsilä Corporation. Only the ZA40S series now remains in the Wärtsilä portfolio. The three designs, covering an output range from 460 kW to 21 600 kW for propulsion and auxiliary power duties, were released for operation on fuels with viscosities up to 700 cSt (Figure 1).
