Faults in piston

1. Cracking: Cracking in piston occur in piston crown and mainly in upper piston wall.

2. Burning: Burns in piston are found in piston crown top surface.

3. Scaling: Scaling in piston is found in piston cooling chamber and passage.

4. Steeping: Steeping in piston occurs in edges of piston ring grooves.

5. Wear: Wear occurs mainly in wear rings, piston skirt and side wall.

6. Corrosion: Hot corrosion on piston occurs mainly in the crown and the Acidic corrosion occurs mainly under the crown.

Do you know the what are Main Reasons for the above Faults in Piston?

1.Sever Thermal and Mechanical stresses occur in side the combustion chamber if the Engine is not properly Power balanced and improper maintenance of Fuel injection system.

2. Due to the Fluctuating Gas Load.

3. Excessive scaling occurs in the combustion chamber due to low grade and improper fuel used for burning.

4. Due to Higher Coolant temperature caused by the improper maintenance of the Jacket Cooling Water Temperature.

5. Local Impingement from Fuel injector.

6. Poor Atomization and Higher Penetration of Fuel.

7. High water content in the fuel.

8. Formation of Cavitations Erosion due to the High temperature of combustion gas.

Do you know What are causes of Piston Running Hot ?

  1. Inadequate circulation of the coolant.
  2. Excessive deposits in cooling passage due to improper feed water used in the Jacket cooling water.
  3. Poor cylinder lubrication.
  4. Faulty piston rings.
  5. Cylinder liner distortion.
  6. Piston misalignment.
  7. Engine / unit over loading.
  8. Excessive water in the fuel.
  9. Insufficient combustion air or lesser the scavenge air.
  10. Late fuel injection.
  11. Poor combustion.
  12. Increased in Piston cooling water temperature than the Jacket cooling water temperature.
